Anyone ever notice that the weather on any given day is used as evidence for or against global warming?

Minneapolis, 36 degrees: "&*%$ing greenhouse effect is ruining snowmobiling season."

Minneapolis, -16 degrees: "Global warming my &*%$ing ass."

Well, according to proponents of the global warming theory, the dramatic climate shift that would be a direct effect of global warming would lead to wildly fluctuating weather. Montana's been somewhat the same in going up and down from subarctic temperatures to the high 40s in the same week. It's just bizarre, and theoretically, that's what's supposed if global warming is occurring right now.

Ok - so I know what they mean now when they say COLD. Not just cold - but COLD.

So is there any weather that would disprove global warming?

Or does global warming require consensus, not proof or disproof?

Well certainly a single day's temperature in a single locale isn't commanding evidence of whether or not it's occurring. A survey of the temperature taken around the globe, averaged over the course of an entire year and then compared to other years gives a much better indication.

Ed, if you're referring to the report released by the IPCC last week, the "consensus" wasn't with regard to whether warming is happening. That much is practically beyond dispute. The question is whether or not increase in temperature is anthropogenic.

The degree to which any number of potential causes is affecting temperature is impossible to calculate with perfect accuracy, but the consensus is that human activity is responsible for the upturn in temperature.

My view: The IPCC is right. You simply cannot double the amount of carbon dioxide, a heat-trapping gas, into the atmosphere and expect that there will be no effect on the temperature.
